Describing Unwanted Thoughts

How many overwhelming thoughts are you getting at the moment? How are you interacting with these thoughts?

It can sometimes feel natural to want to fight these unwelcome thoughts, shout and scream at them! Does this help?

Or does it just spoil your day?

The next time you get an unwelcome thought I would like you try something new.

want you to talk to the thought, as if it’s a family member. Something that is just trying to get your attention. You will remain calm, and you’ll describe the thought in detail.

What is the thought?
What does it look like?
What does it feel like?
Does it make a particular part of your body feel differently?
What does that feel like?
Is it a colour?
Does it have a texture?

Throughout all of this, you will remain calm, you’re in control of your response, and you will not get into the thought, you’re observing the thought.

When your done, imagine the thought slowly drifting away from you until it’s so small you can’t even see if it’s travelling further away from you.

Did it work for you?
