This evening, if you’re still feeling a little restless from your day, or with everything that is going on in the world, I want you to take five or ten minutes just to slow down a little bit.
Get into a comfortable position. Back as straight as it will go. Rest your hands on your knees if comfortable to do so.
I want you to just sit for a moment. Taking in the room around the, the different colours, the different things on the walls. Maybe you recognise something a little different you haven’t noticed before.
Be like this for a minute or two.
Once you feel like you’ve seen all there is to see out in front of you I want you to know think about you.
I want you to think about the physical sensations of sitting where you’re sitting. Are you learning to one side. Is there a twang pain somewhere, maybe some pins and needs might join you soon. But, as long as it’s safe to do so, sit the sensations.
Are they as bad as you think they are? Do you have to move? Can you feel the texture of the furniture around you or of your clothes?
After some time considering your physical position, now is the time to look inward and think about your breath. I don’t want you to control it, just notice it.
It goes in freely, and it leaves freely. In and out, in and out.
Just notice your breath for a little while longer.
Now, really concentrate what the sensation of breathing feels like. How does it feel on your lips, your tongue, as it travels down into your lungs. Is it cool or warm, dry or moist?
What impact does breathing have on your chest as it rises and falls. How that interacts with your clothes and the furniture your sat on. Just focus on the breath and how feels and maybe tastes.
When you’re doing this, other thoughts will come into your head. They’ll distract you pull you away. It may even say that what you’re doing is “stupid” and “you’re wasting your time.” Let it think that.
We can often forget that we are in control of our actions and where want our attention to go. We let our mind dictate where we should do and follow it blindly.
To drown out this voice, we’re not going to push it away. We’re going to do the opposite. Invite that thought, welcome it – “Hello thought, nice of you to join me. You can stay there, I’m focussing my attention on my breath at the moment.”
The thought may stay. After all, we’re not actively trying to get rid of it, we’re actively focussing on our breath.
What you might find though is that it disappears on its own.
What we focus on persists.
If we focus on our breath, our breath stays with us.If we focus on our thoughts, especially the bad ones, we can be led away from what we actually want to focus on.
Slowly but surely bring yourself back into the room. Wiggle your fingers and toes, lift your arms, have a little stretch and just take your time.
Now ask yourself, if you could focus on your breath to get rid a of an unwanted thought for no reason, what other thoughts can you now focus your attention away from?
Grateful for Chance Meetings
Today on Cuppa’ Tea I was joined by Tallulah for the first time as my co-host! Abz was off working so we called in the back-up and I think she was great.
We discussed many things from camping to hair but the theme which stuck out was that of gratitude and chance meetings.
Every single person we meet provides an opportunity to learn something new and maybe forge a friendships.

This in the wake of Abz and I joining a Zoom singing group which was the brain child of their founder member three years ago all the way back in 2017. At the time I was working for Tenovus Cancer Care as Community Development Officer (Choirs) and I was forwarded an email asking about what assistance we could give to someone wanting to set up a singing group similar to our Sing with Us Choirs… Oh, by the way, we’re in New York!
I got back in touch and provided as much information as I could and remained in contact until the present day. In those early years, the need for help and support is paramount to the success of anything and I gave that sense of support and duty, that they were doing the right thing.
I had to email that person before leaving Tenovus that I was going but I would love to keep in contact. The result, they follow this page and we had the pleasure of singing via Zoom with their singing group.
I was brimming with pride knowing that I helped bring those people together, and that through this Page, I have been able to bring even more people together.
“The support from you guys is amazing and my days are much better for joining this amazing community ❤️❤️ xxx” Lauren G-E 2020
I’m proud that each and every one of us took the leap to join in and interact with each other and the positive impact this has had on all of our moods.
I’m grateful for each and everyone of and the chance that brought us all together.
I’m not done with supporting Black Lives Matter

Last week and over the weekend the protests continued marching for Black Lives Matter, and wider than that, basic human rights for everyone.
I admit, I got a little overwhelmed by it over the weekend but was comforted when I saw a Twitter thread advising [white people in particular] that this protest and action needs to be sustainable. Going hell for leather over a weekend and losing sight of the goal is not going to help in the long run.
I’m back writing this week and I want to continue to educate as best as I can. I’ve signed petitions and shared resources on Instagram. I will be looking elsewhere for my ‘usual’ online content focussed on my passions, but not from people who look and sound just like me. I want to highlight Black music and its influence on the world we currently live in.
I’m not going to do this perfectly, and may even stumble into doing things the ‘wrong’ way. My intentions are good, and I want my actions to achieve results.
I’ve seen another great tweet that shows the number of police decisions that have led to arrests of police officers and reopened cases and I can see that Minneapolis has decided to completely re-do their policing by disbanding the police force. What a huge step that is!
In the UK, a statue of Edward Colston was shoved into the dock water, slaver of 84,000 kidnapped Africans. 19,000 dying before reaching their destination. I’ve now come to learn about Sir Thomas Picton, the highest ranking officer killed in the battle of Waterloo, and tyrant of Trinidad. I walked past his Blue Plaque in my town just the other week, we had a school named after him… ironic when you consider that he was tried for authorising the illegal torture of a 14 year old!
I still have a long way to go in learning about the past, and where that puts our country now, but I’m willing to do to it. It may not look like much to others who are far more proactive, but this is a slow burn that I want to sustain the overhaul of an unfit system in our society.
We are all human.
